What we store
- From teachers: the assignment title, prompt, settings, and an optional email address. The email is only used to help recover a lost dashboard link; we do not send newsletters to it.
- From students: the name they type, the text they write, and a timestamped log of edits, cursor moves, window focus changes, and paste attempts inside the editor. That log is what produces the replay and the report. Nothing outside the editor is observed.
- Automatically: a short-lived count of requests per IP address, used only to rate-limit abuse. It is not stored with sessions.
- If you sign up for Pro news: the email address and role you enter.
What we do not do
- No student accounts, logins, or passwords.
- No third-party scripts, analytics, advertising, or tracking pixels on any page.
- No AI detection, and no sending of student text to any AI service.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone.
Who can see student work
Anyone who has the teacher's private dashboard link. It is a long random token; treat it like a password and do not post it. Students see only their own text. The public demo assignment is the exception: it is shared with everyone, and says so.
Retention
Every assignment and all of its sessions, text, and event logs are automatically deleted 180 days after the assignment is created. Teachers who want something deleted sooner can email hello@writtenlive.com with the dashboard link.
Where it lives
Everything runs on Cloudflare's network (Workers and Durable Objects). Data is encrypted in transit. There is no separate marketing site, CRM, or mailing list provider.
Children's data
WrittenLive is a classroom tool used under a teacher's direction. We collect the minimum needed to make the replay work. Teachers can tell students to enter an initial or a student number instead of a full name.
